Sustainability at BreakFree Royal Harbour Cairns

Here at Breakfree Royal Harbour, we are committed to embedding sustainability into every facet of our daily operations. We recognise that sustainability is an ongoing journey and are continually striving to reduce our carbon footprint wherever possible. Below are some of the initiatives we have implemented to date.

Dry Amenities

We are delighted to share our ongoing commitment to reducing single-use plastics in our guest rooms. As part of this initiative, we have made a significant decision to eliminate single-use dry amenities, taking a bold step towards a plastic-free environment.

We understand the importance of preserving our planet for future generations. By removing single-use plastic amenities such as toothbrushes, combs, and shower caps from our guest rooms, we are significantly reducing our environmental footprint.

Large Amenities

As part of our ongoing efforts, we have made the proactive decision to move to large format amenities, replacing our single-use plastic common amenities with eco-friendly pump dispensers throughout the hotel. By eliminating single-use plastic bottles, we are significantly reducing the amount of waste generated by our operations. This commitment aligns with our dedication to environmental stewardship and reflects our ongoing efforts to improve sustainability in all aspects of our hotel.

Recycling

At Breakfree Royal Harbour, hotel waste is separated into co-mingle, cardboard, bottles and general waste, minimising our impact on landfill.  In addition, we have taken a number of steps to further reduce water and embrace a circular system.

  • Cans and bottles are separated and taken to Containers for Change
  • Food composting in our garden on level 2
  • Using local suppliers where available

Community Support

We are committed to maintaining strong connections with our local community and give back wherever possible, including to the below organisations:

  • Royal Flying Doctors
  • Cairns Homelessness Services Hub
  • Containers for Change

Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge the Gimuy Walaburra Yidinji and Yirrangangi as the Traditional Custodians of the land, seas, and waterways on which our property and surrounding area stands.  We pay respect to their Elders both past and present.

Accessibility

At Breakfree Royal Harbour, we strive to accommodate the diverse needs of all our guests, including those with mobility challenges. While we don't currently have dedicated accessible rooms, we do have 4 apartments across each room type that have had their spa converted to a walk-in shower. Our common areas allow for easy navigation from the ground floor, to reception on level 1 and to all of the apartments with wide access elevators and stair free corridors. Additionally, our friendly staff are available to assist with any specific accessibility needs or requests to ensure that every guest enjoys a comfortable and memorable stay with us.
